The INstep men and women’s Walking Group
The Instep walking Group sort of evolved a number of years ago because a small group had a shot at the ‘Three Peaks Challenge’ Ben Nevis, Scafell and Snowdon. The mini bus broke down on route so they did not manage the three mountains. Still keen it was decided to have another attempt the following year, with a larger group and two mini buses.
As part of the training programme regular walks in Sutton Park were arranged and the occasional Saturday trip to the Malvern Hills and Wales. Eventually the challenge was completed within the 24hour dead line – no mean feat! The group enjoyed the camaraderie and so more regular walks started and a succession of physical challenges was undertaken. Although we do not do many challenges now we do still generally walk on the first Saturday of each month, travelling out around Sutton Coldfield within a fifty miles radius, we travel by car or sometimes mini bus. We make a charge for fuel. Our walks generally are 7/8 miles or if there some energetic members they may add an extra 3/4 miles onto their walk whilst the others stop at a convenient café for refreshment.
Walkers do have to have a reasonable standard of fitness because most of the walks take place in the countryside and often hilly terrain.
Suitable walking gear is required both in clothing and footwear. Many in the group use a walking pole which they find helpful. Usually we carry a packed lunch which we eat on route.
You will find on the website pictures of some of our group walks.
